The Saltwater Slip is a simple slip dress with adjustable straps that can be layered or worn on its own. The pattern comes with two length options: above the knee, and tea length (with side slits). It also comes with optional side ties to add a bit of waist shaping. Wear this slip over a tee shirt, under a sheer dress, or on its own! Instructor: Qurrat Thakur an experienced award winning quilter began her quilting journey in 2000, focusing exclusively on straight-line walking foot quilting for 13 years. In 2013, encouraged by a quilty friend, she summoned the courage to try free motion quilting (FMQ). She took to it instantly, mastering the technique on her domestic Brother machine. Since then, she has upgraded to a sit-down longarm and has won multiple ribbons and awards for her quilts. Now, she shares her expertise by guiding others through the basics of free motion quilting on a domestic sewing machine, offering success-oriented tips and techniques to help quilters gain the confidence to tackle FMQ independently.Prerequisites
You should be familiar with your sewing machine, including how to thread it, wind a bobbin, lower the feed dogs, change feet, adjust stitch length, and modify tension.
Basic Requirements
- Needles: Topstitch needle or embroidery needle (90/14 or 80/12)
- Extension Table: A table designed to fit your sewing machine
- Darning or Free Motion Foot: Essential for free motion quilting
- Thread: 40 wt, 50 wt, or 60 wt thread. For personal preference, 60 wt polyester thread like Glide is recommended for both top and bobbin. Be sure to wind several bobbins with the same color as your top thread, and at least one with a contrasting color.
- Batting: 80/10 or wool batting is preferred, but for practice, 80/20 is more economical. Scrap batting works well for learning.
- Quilt Sandwiches: Bring at least two quilt sandwiches made from fat quarters, roughly 18” x 22”.
- Notebook & Pen/Pencil: For sketching and note-taking
- Thread Snips: Handy for cutting threads quickly
- Fabric Marking Tool: Air or water-erasable pen, or a chalk pen
- Single Hole Stitch Plate: Optional, but recommended for better stitch precision
- Quilting Gloves*: Machingers or any gloves with grip (optional, but helpful for better control)
- Teflon Sheet: A sheet like the Supreme Slider or Sew Slip to cover your extension table (optional, but highly recommended for smoother quilting)

In this class, you'll cut and shape your own quilted shoe uppers, bind the edges, install grommet eyelets, and use traditional shoemaking techniques to attach your custom quilted uppers to high-quality sneaker soles. The class fee includes all the materials you need, such as sneaker soles, waxed thread, grommets, and any additional tools required to complete your unique pair of sneakers.

Pre-Class Preparation:This class requires some prep work before you arrive. Please ensure your fabric is pre-quilted and that your bias binding is already made. You will also be contacted to confirm your shoe size and sole color selection.
Instructors:
Jill Taylor and Ann Randall are both experienced, award-winning quilters and bag makers. With over 20 years of combined teaching experience, they share a passion for beautiful fabrics and simple, efficient designs.
Prerequisites:
Participants should be comfortable using their sewing machine, including knowing how to:
- Thread the machine
- Wind a bobbin
- Lower the feed dogs
- Change feet
- Adjust stitch length
- Modify tension
You should also be familiar with how to attach bias binding to a quilted edge.
Basic Requirements:
- Sewing Machine : A standard machine with straight stitch and zigzag stitch capabilities.
- Machine Needles : Topstitch needle or embroidery needle (size 90/14 or 80/12).
- Thread : 40wt or 50wt sewing thread in colors that complement your binding.
- Quilt Sandwich : Bring at least one quilt sandwich made from two fat quarters and Soft n Stable OR Bosal-R foam interfacing, approximately 18” x 22” or 1/3 yard (if you plan to fussy cut your fabric).
- Bias Binding : 2.5 yards of precut and ironed bias binding, cut at 1.75" wide, folded in half with wrong sides together. Must be cut on the bias.
- Additional Fabric: Bring an extra fat quarter of fabric that matches either the outside of your shoe uppers or the binding. This will be used to create thumb tabs for the back of the sneakers and string supports for the tongue.
- Sneaker Laces : 45” for low- and mid-top sneakers, 60” for high-top sneakers.
- Wonder Clips or Pins : For securing binding while sewing.
- Thimble : For pushing the needle through thick fabric.
- Notebook & Pen/Pencil : For sketching ideas and taking notes.
- Scissors: Fabric and paper scissors.
- Fabric Marking Tool : An air- or water-erasable pen, or a chalk pen that is visible on both sides of your quilt sandwich fabric.
