Fabric Dyeing Workshop
Dive into the art and science of fabric dyeing in this hands-on workshop, where you'll explore how color transforms textiles. This class teaches a modified immersion dyeing technique using fiber reactive dyes which can be applied to cotton, linen, rayon, hemp, and many other cellulose fibers including wood. By the end of the class, you'll have a strong grasp of:
- How fibers interact with dyes
- A modified immersion dyeing method
- How to create custom color formulas
- Techniques for achieving beautiful gradients
Students will leave the class equipped to dye fabric in any color, including over 900 hues from the book we'll introduce. You'll also gain a deeper understanding of how dyes work, enabling you to use them more effectively across various media and create stunning gradient effects.

Instructor: Steven Salazar is an Austin local fiber artist who is a self-taught knitter, hand weaver, fiber dyer (natural, fiber reactive and acid dyes), fiber spinner, and quilter. He enjoys deepening his knowledge about the relationships of color to develop visually interesting color palettes and published a hand weaving draft with Gist Yarns that explores how colors relate to each other. Steven is professionally trained with a commercial art degree in fashion design.
