You do need the upgrade for most of the designs that use the fills. The idea of the book is to work through each design creating it in MDC yourself not to just load fully finished designs and stitch them
In the book where I saved my work those files (.PM9) can be viewed and loaded into My Design Center.
An embroidery file of the complete design can be loaded onto the machine using the included .PHC files from the Embroidery screen. PHC files can also be viewed in PE Design and other software.

Courtney and I traveled to New Jersey, home of Brother USA’s corporate headquarters, to get hands-on with the Aveneer EV1, Brother’s brand new flagship top-of-the-line Sewing, Quilting, and Embroidery machine.
