In this 21st installment of Kaffe Fassett's ever-popular series of patchwork and quilting books, Kaffe has chosen to show off his latest range of fabrics by revisiting many of his favorite medallion quilt blocks. Photographed on location at the world-famous Hidcote Manor Garden in the beautiful Cotswolds countryside, these delectable quilts find their perfect setting among the brilliant flower borders, avenues of trees, and stunning architectural features that make Hidcote one of the most visited gardens in the U.K. Medallion quilts have universal appeal and the simple framework of the medallion design makes a great vehicle for Kaffe's eye-catching color combinations in his brilliant range of fabric designs. Assisted by his team of designers and makers, Kaffe has created an exquisite and varied range of 19 medallion designs, among them: the rich Berry Ice Cream quilt, photographed in Hidcote's world famous Red Border the dramatic Dark Gameboard, photographed against the geometric precision of Hidcote's famous topiary hedges the soft Flowery Jar, its pink and blue themed design echoing the colors of the flowers in Hidcote's early summer border. Kaffe Fassett's Quilts in the Cotswolds provides all the basic instructional text, diagrams, and templates to make the quilts, plus a section on basic patchwork techniques for less experienced quilters.

With his unerring eye, Kaffe has succeeded in finding the perfect location for his exquisite new collection of quilts, featuring both his scintillating new fabric designs and his classics, all in his unique color palette. This time he has chosen the iconic 13th-century Powis Castle in north Wales, where the 20 quilts in this book are set off against the storybook castle and stunning grounds. Photographed brilliantly by Debbie Patterson, they are displayed in all their glory in a sumptuous eye-catching quilt gallery. Included in this set of new designs are many very special ones by Kaffe, and others by his long-time friend and co-designer, Liza Prior Lucy. Kaffe’s Saturated Red quilt finds its perfect partner in the rich deep hues of the bed hangings on a magnificent four-poster, while his Cold Frames quilt, with its dramatic black-and-white sashing framing fussy-cut flower prints, echoes the studding on the medieval wooden doors into the courtyard. The cool geometry of his Marble Tiles quilt takes its inspiration from the painted paneling in the Long Gallery, and his Vintage Library quilt echoes the warm tones of the hundreds of leather-bound books in the Castle’s collection. As usual, this book--the 24th in the series--includes a range of quilts for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced, and features an eclectic mix of patterns and colors ranging from Philip Jacobs’ eye-catching bold floral prints to Brandon Mably’s smaller-scale quirky patterns. Flat shots and a practical know-how section and glossary back up the fully illustrated, step-by-step instructions for each quilt.

In this 22nd installment of Kaffe Fassett’s ever-popular series of patchwork and quilting books, the quilts have been photographed on location in Burano, a tiny island in Italy’s Venetian archipelago, famous for its lace making but also for its brilliantly painted houses in a myriad jewel colors. The colorful house walls, sometimes distressed and occasionally decorated with murals, form the backdrop, along with the canals, bridges, and boats of this special Venetian island, to another wonderful selection of Kaffe's new quilt designs. The collection of 19 quilts features both new fabric designs from the Kaffe Collective and some of his Classics. Bali Brocade makes a fantastic background to Kaffe’s sumptuous Shimmer Star quilt with its ripples of pattern in contrasting prints. His two versions of a very simple quilt, comes in two very different colorways. Hot Steps is a riot of color, whereas by contrast its sister quilt, Cool Steps, in dusty blues, greens, and greys has an dreamy quality. Liza Prior Lucy’s rich and dark Turkish Coffee quilt, with its hint of Eastern promise, fussy cuts Kaffe’s new Turkish Delight fabric to brilliant effect. Kaffe Fassett’s Quilts in Burano provides all the instructional text, diagrams, and templates to make the quilts, plus a section on basic patchwork techniques for less experienced quilters.

Tension Not Releasing
Recently we were made aware of an intermittent issue with top tensions not releasing after a thread cut, thus causing
tension issues and bird nesting.
When an operator selects the auto thread
cutter and does not wait until the cutting
process is complete, lifts the presser foot
by hand or by FHS, there is a sporadic
chance the top tension is not releasing.
We have also seen the hour glass icon
spinning.
With machines that have an automatic
presser foot lifter the timing between cutter and lifter action is governed by the
FW, therefore we do not see such issues.
For right now we can provide this solution.
If such issues appear, please let the consumer know to slow down and let the
machine cut the thread first before the
presser foot is lifted.
Lowering and then raising the presser
foot bar should release the top tension
disks. This may take 2-3 times to release.
If the hourglass appears it maybe required to reboot the machine.

With Darning foot # 9, small holes and tears in fabrics practically repair themselves. The hopper mechanism combined with the vertical spring presses the foot firmly to the project, preventing the material from pulling up withthe needle during sewing (flagging) and ensuring a neat stitch pattern.
The special shape of Darning foot # 9 also makes it ideal for free-hand embroidery, quilting, and creating attractive lace and monograms.
Discover Darning foot # 9 for darning and embroidering in the extensive BERNINA accessories range, now!
Use the Bernina Free Motion Embroidery Darning Foot for meding or patching holes and tears in fabric and other free-motion techniques.
Works with the feed dog lowered, leaving the motion of the fabric up to the sewer
Foot has a vertical spring action to eliminate flagging of fabric as the foot floats across the top of the fabric
Opening of foot accommodates both straight and zig zag stitches up to 5.5 mm in width
Fits Bernina domestic sewing machines using feet tagged with red numbers
BERNINA presser feet -- Darning foot #9. Published on Oct 15, 2010
The 12th section of the BERNINA presser-feet online tutorial is about the darning foot no. 9. The darning foot is suitable for a series of free-motion techniques such as darning smaller holes or tears. It is also ideal for embroidery, making lace, quilting and sewing monograms. When the needle raises a vertical spring presses the fabric down (hopper mechanism) thus preventing the fabric from lifting along with the needle or flagging. Use a hoop for darning and stitch once lengthways and once crossways over the mend. Use a fine darning thread in matching color to blend in with the fabric.
Ideal for buttonhole seams, appliqués and decorative stitches
Superb effects achieved by couching perle yarns
Sewing off-the-edge scallops and raised effects
Simultaneous sewing of reinforcing thread or elastic thread
For 5.5 mm and 9 mm machines

For patchwork projects with seam allowances of 3 mm (1/8”) or 6 mm (1/4”)

In Stock! Piping foot # 38 is often also termed the “uneven foot”, owing to the different thicknesses of the two halves of its sole. Consequently, this foot is ideal for creating narrow-to-medium piping, as well as for sewing unevenly thick fabric layers.
The right side of Piping foot # 38 is higher than the left side, allowing it to ride easily over the fabric layers as you sew. In addition to piping, this foot is also suitable for sewing on thick tape and ribbon, cords, or hook-and-loop tape.
TIP: when sewing on tape, the tape should lie under the right side of the foot flush with the edge of the thicker left side. This will allow the needle to catch the edge of the tape more easily.
This foot was developed for 9mm model BERNINA's 1630, artista 180 thru 200). However, it can be used on all models BERNINA for bulkier applications. This foot is especially well suited for sewing seams in thicker jerseys and sweater knits using an overlock stitch. Couching thicker yarns and cords, and piping One side of the foot is higher than the other to accommodate the uneven layers encountered when seaming sweater knits or covering and inserting piping (especially corded piping) The extra space under the foot helps prevent knit fabrics from stretching as they are stitched The same groove under the foot makes it well suited for making corded piping. In many applications, corded piping can be made and applied in one operation with the help of Foot #12C (and #12C will accommodate thicker cording such as for luggage and upholstery applications)

Controlled stitch length
The sewing speed adapts automatically to the speed of the moving fabric
Automatic control of the stitch length ensures absolutely even stitch formation
For 5.5 mm & 9 mm machines with BSR function
The BERNINA Stitch Regulator is an innovative accessory that is far more than just a presser foot...it is part of a dynamic interaction between quilter, accessory and BERNINA Sewing Machine. After extensive development and testing, the BERNINA Stitch Regulator was patented as a unique innovation that is still unparalleled today.
A step above traditional free-motion stitching, the BERNINA Stitch Regulator removes the challenge of maintaining a consistent stitch length as the feed dogs are lowered for fabric movement in all directions.
The hallmark of excellence in free-motion techniques is the ability to keep the stitch length even and consistent as the fabric is guided without the assistance of the feed dogs. The BERNINA Stitch Regulator provides beginners with the confidence to master increasingly popular free-motion techniques. For more experienced free-motion stitchers, the BERNINA Stitch Regulator offers the added security of consistent stitch length, providing the confidence to try more challenging techniques.
With traditional free-motion sewing techniques, once the feed dogs are lowered, keeping the machine speed, the fabric movement and the stitch length in harmony is the responsibility of the stitcher. Hours and hours of practice are required to master the complex interplay resulting in an even stitch pattern.
The BERNINA Stitch Regulator eliminates this challenge, reducing free-motion mastery to minutes instead of hours. The BERNINA Stitch Regular allows any hobby sewer, whether a beginner or advanced, to master free-motion sewing technique! Try it today!
With the BERNINA Stitch Regulator the sewer can concentrate exclusively on creativity.
A patented BERNINA innovation for mastering free-motion stitching
With the unique BERNINA Stitch Regulator, anyone can master free-motion stitching.
Activating the BERNINA Stitch Regulator is as simple as attaching the accessory to your BSR compatible machine, lowering the feed dogs and selecting the mode of your choice. Set the stitch length according to your preference for the technique and hand and you are ready to sew.

How does the BSR work?
With the aid of technology, the BSR system reads (similar to a wireless mouse) the surface of the fabric under the presser foot. A sensor transfers information to the sewing machine as the material is moved. The sewing machine calculates the necessary sewing speed in order to sew consistent stitches according to the set stitch length.. A slower needle movement and motor speed is required if the material is moved slowly. A faster needle movement and motor speed is needed for faster fabric movement. In The BSR in tandem with the sewing machine, automatically adjusts to the sewer's speed for even and consistent stitching.
Sew and quilt more beautifully and with ease. Uniform stitches every time
The BERNINA Stitch Regulator (BSR) produces neat, consistent stitching with stitches of precisely the same length while free-motion sewing. Reacting to the movement of the fabric, it adjusts the speed of of the machine automatically when free-motion quilting with the feed dog lowered.
Inspired by textile artists, after an 18-month development period, the BERNINA innovation team created a small sensation in 2005. They designed a foot that recognises sewing speed with the aid of a sensor, and controls stitch length when sewing with the feed dogs lowered. All over the world free motion quilters love to work with the BERNINA Stitch Regulator. Some of them can't imagine a life without BSR. For the 10th anniversary of the BERNINA Stitch Regulator, we’ve asked customers and experts from around the world to give us their opinion on the BSR, as well as to send us a BSR sewing project with instructions. In this anniversary year, we’ll be introducing different people and their projects every month.
The BERNINA Stitch Regulator helps you achieve perfect results when free-motion sewing– and has done so for 10 years!
The technology of the revolutionary BSR System guarantees even stitch lengths, regardless of sewing speed, stitch length and how the fabric is guided.
The result: top-quality textile design, no matter what creative techniques you use:
Whether sewing straight or zigzag stitches, the BERNINA Stitch Regulator is distinguished by its precision. Particularly with intricate and complex designs, an even stitch length is of crucial importance for achieving a flawless appearance.
The BSR’s built-in sensor controls the sewing speed, which would otherwise be controlled with the foot control. The advantage is that you can concentrate entirely on the movement of the fabric when sewing and quilting with the BSR, ensuring that your creative ideas are perfectly realised with a constant stitch length.

Blindstitch foot # 5 is the invisible-hemming expert. When you sew a blind-hem with this foot, the stitching can scarcely be seen from the front. With Blindstitch foot # 5 the stitch is formed over a special blade that acts as a guide, creating a slightly loose stitch so that the hem lies nice and flat.
When the fabric is pressed flat, the needle-penetration points on the front of the fabric “close up”, making the seam virtually invisible. What’s more, the guide blade ensures an even distance to the folded edge, allowing the hem to be sewn neatly and consistently.
Suitable for practically all fabrics, Blindstitch foot # 5 also makes quick work of narrow-edgestitching medium weight and thick fabrics with the needle position to the left or right.
Discover Blindstitch foot # 5 and let it help you get to grips with challenging hemming tasks!
The main use for Blindstitch Foot #5 is sewing a blind hem. The goal is to stitch a hem that lies flat and does not pucker. Because the guide extends down the middle of the foot, the needle must form the stitch over it as the hem is sewn. This makes a loose stitch, which in this case is a good thing. The extra slack in the thread lets the fabric lie flat without puckering once the hem is stitched.
Binder Foot #95C is a special presser foot for use in conjunction with binder attachments for pre-folded and unfolded bias tape.
The special design of this presser foot supports and facilitates sewing with Binder attachment #87 and #88. Binder Foot #95 enables you to create neat, even edge finishes on quilts, home furnishings and garments, so both simple and elaborate sewing projects are successfully completed in no time flat.

When sewing together two pieces of fabric with Tailor tack foot # 7 the thread tension is loosened slightly, so that the thread can pass easily over the ridge in the center of the foot. The zigzag stitch used forms loose loops which then slide off to the back thanks to the special V-shaped opening on the foot.
For marking seam lines or darts, the fabric is carefully pulled apart after sewing. The Tailor tack foot can also be used for decorative purposes.

Buttonhole foot with slide # 3A makes it a cinch to sew buttonholes of the same length.
You can then sew as many buttonholes of the exact same length as you want, in next to no time. With Buttonhole foot with slide # 3A, a sensor on the presser foot determines the buttonhole length and relays the dimensions to the sewing machine.
This allows perfectly identical buttonholes to be sewn again, until the size is changed. Buttonhole foot with slide # 3A is therefore ideal for sewing button plackets on garments and home furnishings.
The "A" in this Buttonhole Foot stands for automatic sewing of the buttonhole. You can use this foot on Bernina machines that have a maximum stitch width of 5.5mm and a variable buttonhole length of up to 30mm. You can sew buttonholes with or without cording. The sensor can measure the buttonholes automatically based on the size of the desired button. This allows you to produce any number of buttonholes of the exact same length. Use together with the fabric-feeding aid or the buttonhole leveler as well as the buttonhole cutter and button-sew-on foot to create perfect buttonholes with consummate ease.
Buttonhole foot #3C is ideally suited to sewing buttonholes, as well as gathering with cord or elastic (smocking). Thanks to its practical grooves, Buttonhole foot #3C is able to glide smoothly over the thread beads of the buttonhole, enabling particularly easy and precise sewing.

Tutorial: how to sew buttonholes with the BERNINA presser feet no. 3, 3A, 3B, 3C. The upper thread can be conveniently pulled to the back through the slot in Buttonhole foot #3C before you begin sewing. In this way, attractive buttonholes with and without cording can easily be sewn in the desired length.
Overlock foot # 2A is ideal for producing serged seams and hems. It is especially well suited for neatening simple seams.
The stitches are formed over the pin on the inside edge of the foot, giving them an additional amount of thread. This prevents the fabric from bunching up and produces a flat, elastic seam. The Overlock foot can also be used to sew high quality hems, waistbands and overlock seams on knit fabrics.
Use practical Overlock foot # 2A for your sewing projects to produce neat, elastic seams or stylish waistbands, quickly and easily.

Nothing is more frustrating than struggling with a fabric that just won’t feed smoothly under the needle. Plastic, vinyl, and leather are materials that can present this problem as you try to stitch them. Metal presser feet often stick to them and drag across the surface, sometimes not feeding at all. There’s an easy solution to this problem that will let you make projects from any form of plastic or leather.
Non-Stick Presser Feet
BERNINA has four non-stick presser feet that have coated soles that let them slide over “sticky” materials that otherwise may slow you down. These four presser feet correspond to four metal feet that you probably use every day and are used for the same techniques as their un-coated counterparts. Non-Stick Zigzag Foot #52/52C/52D is an all-purpose presser foot for most general sewing tasks such as seaming, hemming, and open decorative stitches.

Introducting the Legacy Collection Now available for early BERNINA machine models!
Note: We used the Bernina #72 Foot with our Sew Steady Westalee Low Shank Templates at Bernina University last year and it worked great. You have to turn off the pivot action on the Bernina machine, and you have to adjust the foot to the lowest position. Sew Steady
Jessica at Dream World advised, "One thing I like to share with customers is the Bernina #72 Foot can work with any of our Westalee Design Templates. We used our Low Shank Templates (3mm) with this Foot at Bernina University last year, and they worked quite well. The use of our Low Shank Templates does require the customer turn off the pivot action on their Bernina machine, and adjust the Foot to its lowest position.
We certainly understand many of our customers using Bernina’s #72 Foot have a preference of Template thickness, and we do welcome this when a customer expresses a preference. We see a lot of our High Shank Templates (4.5mm) used with Bernina’s Foot, and while we see some of our Long Arm Templates (6mm) used with the Bernina Foot it may not provide the best visibility of the needle."
Ruler work on a Bernina Sewing Machine. This demonstration shows the Bernina 350 using the Westalee Ruler Foot fitted to the Bernina Adapter Shank. The template is Westalee Design's Spin-e-fex no 6 11 1/2" The video shows just how easy it is to rulers on your Domestic Sewing Machine with this Low Shank Ruler Foot.
This foot allows you to sew along acrylic quilting templates (rulers) that are 1/4 inch thick to create decorative quilting designs such as lines, feathers, circles etc. The height of the foot’s sole makes it possible to quilt along all the edges of these rulers. The #72 foot is for BERNINA domestic machines new style. Old style BERNINA machines need to use the BERNINA #77 Adaptor Shank (old style) with a Westalee Low Shank Ruler Foot.
With this technique, the feed dog is lowered and the fabric with the acrylic ruler is guided manually with the base of the foot resting against the edge of the ruler. Due to the adjustment dial, the height of the foot can be adjusted to match the fabric thickness individually so that the fabric can be moved smoothly without getting stuck. Moreover, the additional option provided by the adjustable foot height extends the scope of applications for BERNINA sewing machines without the function ‘automatic presser foot pressure/presser foot height.’
